When Valeant discontinued the brand in the United States around 2008, the trademark went dormant and the active ingredient — monobenzone — remained FDA-approved and produced internationally.
Generic Benoquin is the unbranded designation for monobenzone 20% cream manufactured to USP (United States Pharmacopeia) specifications. Chemically, generic Benoquin is identical to the original Valeant Benoquin 20%. The difference is the price (a fraction of US-compounded equivalents) and the manufacturer.

Like all monobenzone 20% formulations, our generic Benoquin is taken up by melanocytes in normally pigmented skin and selectively destroys them. As melanocytes are eliminated, the skin can no longer produce melanin in the treated areas, and depigmentation progresses to match the surrounding vitiligo patches.
